Syria still has the right to take back the Golan Heights, which Israel had occupied from Syria during a civil war and then annexed it illegally recognized by world powers, by any means possible and the military option is also included, Midhat Saleh, the Golan Heights department’s director in the Syrian government told Sputnik on Thursday.

According to Sputnik news reports, Syria hopes the international community would be able to end the Israeli annexation and occupation of the Golan Heights, according to Saleh.

Saleh stated: “The Golan Heights is an integral part of the Syrian territory. We have the right to return this land at any time and by any means which we consider necessary. In my opinion, the only language which Israel understands is the language of force and resistance.”

He said that “we are now at war with Israel”, and “we” have this right since Israel doesn’t recognize international resolutions and the United Nations security council resolutions, while the United States supports Israel in this.

He said, “We have the right to return the Golan Heights in the most fitting way for us, including via war or popular resistance.” He insisted this is their right which was guaranteed by the international resolutions.

The Arab League leaders have said on April 1, they would seek a United Nations security council resolution against the United States’s motion to recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights and pledged to support Palestinians.

According to Reuters news reports, Arab League secretary-general Ahmed Aboul Gheit said, “We, the leaders of the Arab countries gathered in Tunisia … express our rejection and condemnation of the United States decision to recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan.”

He said the Arab nations would provide a drafted resolution to the UNSC and seek a legal opinion from the ICJ (International Court of Justice) over Washington’s decision. It has also warned other nations to stay away from following the US’ lead.

Last week, US President Donald Trump has inked a proclamation recognizing Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which Israel had annexed from Syria during a civil war in 1981 after seizing it in 1967.
