Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen said on Wednesday, she has never accepted the “1992 consensus” and will never do so as it is equivalent in seriousness to the “one China, two systems” solution conceived by China to bring Taiwan under China and its control.

According to news reports, speaking at a news conference, Taiwan president said since she held the office in May 2016, she rejected the “1992 consensus”, a goal which is the unification of Taiwan with China.

Tsai said: “We have never accepted the ‘1992 consensus.’ The fundamental reason is that the ‘1992 consensus,’ as defined by Beijing, is, in fact, the ‘one China principle’ and ‘one China, two systems’ formula’.”

She further said Taiwan will never accept the formula of “one China, two systems” and said, “Taiwan will never accept the ‘one China, two systems’ formula, and the vast majority of Taiwan’s people are firmly opposed to the approach designed by Beijing.”

The “1992 consensus” was an agreement reached in 1992 between Chinese communist officials and then Kuomintang (KMT) government of Taiwan, where both sides of the Taiwan Strait would acknowledge that there is only “one China” with both sides free interpreting what “China” means.

During an event to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the “Message to Compatriots in Taiwan” at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, Chinese President Xi Jinping has said the reunification of Taiwan must come under China’s one-principle which will accept Taiwan as a part of China, an anathema to the supporters of Taiwan’s independence.

Xi said, “We are willing to create broad space for peaceful reunification, but will leave no room for any form of separatist activities,” adding, “We make no promise to renounce the use of force and reserve the option of taking all necessary means.”

Taiwan’s ministry of foreign affairs (MOFA) said Jinping’s attempt pressuring Taiwan through the “1992 consensus” and Beijing’s “one China principle” highlights its ignorance over the fact that Taiwan has been globally recognized democracy, and that Taiwan citizens would only refuse to accept Beijing’s approach.

MOFA said: “We look forward to working with the international community to jointly safeguard our shared common values and establish an international order based on freedom, democracy and respect for human rights.”

Meanwhile, the MAC (Mainland Affairs Council) said Taiwan will never accept an offer for a talk session with China, who is determined to crush out Taiwan’s sovereignty. It also urged China to not misjudge the situation and take any of unilateral decision or action as Taiwan is already prepared in order to safeguards its sovereignty and dignity.
