Britain, June 7: British Prime Minister Theresa May will on Friday officially step down as the leaders of the Conservative Party, but slated to remain as the prime minister until her successor is decided.

According to BBC news reports, the prime minister has announced she will step down two weeks ago, stating it was the matter of intense regret that during her tenure she had been unable to deliver Brexit.

Eleven members of parliament (MPs) from the Conservative Party are vying to replace May as the party chief, as well as, United Kingdom (UK) prime minister.

“Emotional” May was quoted by CNN as saying, “Ever since I first stepped through the door behind me as prime minister I have striven to make the United Kingdom a country that works not just for the privileged few but for everyone, and to honour the result of the referendum.”

May’s decision to resign comes amidst uncertainty over Britain’s future in the next few months, whether the UK will leave the European Union (EU) as slated with or without any deal.

May has been long making efforts to push per Brexit agreement or an alternative withdrawal deal through the UK parliament. However, she failed thrice to get her deal through the parliament, which led her to request a Brexit extension to delay the withdrawal process from the bloc.

The Brexit withdrawal date was hence changed to April 12 from March 29. The EU leaders, last month, agreed to extend the Brexit process to an additional six months with October 31 as the fresh date from Britain’s departure from the bloc.
