The Mozambican government has announced on Thursday the “compulsory” evacuation of above 30, 000 people residing in the region, to a secure area, as it informed landfall of Cyclone Kenneth in the eastern coastal area of Africa, within one month of recovery from Cyclone Idai’ devastating trails that has claimed the lives of more than 1000 people.

Cyclone Kenneth has struck off northern Mozambique with the flow of winds up to 220 km per hour on late Thursday, heading from Comoros, the island nation, where it killed three people overnight, according to ANI news reports.

Mozambican National Institute of Disaster Management (INGC) spokesperson Paulo Tomas was quoted as saying, “The compulsory evacuation process will continue until we have all people on secure ground.”

The INGC stated it has already supplied lots of humanitarian aid to provide assistance to 140,000 people for 15 days.

The United Nations world food programme, the humanitarian agency, has also said the Cyclone Kenneth was “expected to bring heavy rains in the area, with more than 600 millimetres rainfall expected”.

The INGC reported the volume of heavy rain would nearly double the 10-day to assembled rainfall that has caused severe flooding in Beira, when Cyclone Idai has made its landfall.

Mozambique, the region who has been recovering from previous cyclones, was hit by two other powerful tropical storms within six weeks.

The UN agency said the fresh cyclone threatens Mozambican region where residents are not casual to such storm, leading to severe flooding.
