Hundreds of thousands of Sudanese civilians gathered outside the defence ministry on Thursday, campaigning a sit-in protest, demanding the nation’s transitional military council to hand over power to the public in order to form a civilian transitional body.

According to Reuters news reports, demonstrators chanted “Freedom and revolution are the choices of the people” and “Civilian rule, civilian rule”, as well as, waved national flags.

One of the protesters stated: “We will remain in the street until power is handed to civilian authority. We will bring down military rule.”

However, the military council has said it was ready to meet some of the demands of protesters but was not willing to transfer or hand over power to a civilian transitional council.

Lieutenant General Salah Abdelkhalek, the member of the military council, told a state-run TV on Thursday, “We are completely committed to handing over power within a maximum two years,” adding, “Perhaps the most difficult issue facing the military council now through its political committee is getting agreement from the political spectrum and the community forces on the naming of a prime minister. The ball is in their court.”

The military council, who replaced the president from Thursday since Bashir was ousted and declared a state of emergency, announced a new decisions’ raft on late Sunday, including the retirement of defence minister Awad Ibn Auf as well as his deputy, who had resigned as the head of the transitional body after replacing Bashir.
