Boris-Trump

Washington DC, July 24: United States President Donald Trump has on Tuesday said Britons like him and that is why they are calling their new prime minister, Boris Johnson, “Britain’s Trump”.

Trump was quoted by The Hill as saying: “We have a really good man who’s going to be the prime minister of the UK now, Boris Johnson. Goodman, he is tough, and he is smart.”

He added, “They are saying ‘Britain Trump’. They call him Britain Trump, and people are saying that’s a good thing. They like me over there. That’s what they wanted. That’s what they need.”

The US president’s remarks came a few hours after Johnson declared victory in Tory’s leadership and became the new prime minister of the United Kingdom (UK) on Tuesday, by securing 92,153 votes against British foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt, who secured 46,656 votes.

On Tuesday, soon after Johnson was announced as new PM, Trump congratulated him via Twitter: “Congratulations to Boris Johnson on becoming the new prime minister of the United Kingdom. He will be great!”

CNN has reported Boris will succeed Theresa May as the UK Prime Minister and the leader of the Conservative Party.

Immediately after the results were out, Johnson, in a speech, said, “Today the campaign is over and the work begins.”
