Washington DC, August 19: United Nations (UN) secretary-general Antonio Guterres has on Sunday strongly condemned the “horrific” suicide bombing attack in Kabul at a wedding palace on Saturday night that claimed the lives of at least 63 people with over 180 other injured.

In an official statement cited by Xinhua News Agency, Guterres’ spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said, “The Secretary-General strongly condemned the horrific 17 August terrorist attack on a wedding ceremony in Kabul, claiming the lives of 63 people and injuring over 180.”

The UN chief also expressed “his deepest sympathies to the families of the victims and the Government and people of Afghanistan”. Guterres wished a “swift recovery to those injured”.

The attack took place on Saturday night bombing the Dubai City wedding hall in a western neighbourhood, Kabul – home to several in the nation’s minority Shia Hazara community.

The IS (Islamic State) has claimed the responsibility of the Kabul attack – expected to be the deadliest terror attack this year in the war-ravaged nation.

Eyewitnesses and sources said the wedding hall was accumulated with guests when the suicide bomb exploded, according to the Afghan-based reporters Bilal Sarwary.
