The United Nations (UN) is expected to provide emergency financial assistance worth $13 million to the Comoros and Mozambique in order to assist supply water and food, and also reconstruct damage caused to infrastructure due to Cyclone Kenneth, the UN body said on Sunday.

In a statement, UN Humanitarian Chief Mark Lowcock said, “This new allocation of Central Emergency Response Fund funds will help humanitarian partners to scale up the response to address the needs of those most vulnerable in the aftermath of Cyclone Kenneth,” according to Reuters news reports.

The Mozambican government has announced on Thursday the “compulsory” evacuation of above 30, 000 people residing in the region, to a secure area, as it informed landfall of Cyclone Kenneth in the eastern coastal area of Africa, within one month of recovery from Cyclone Idai’ devastating trails that has claimed the lives of more than 1000 people.

The world bank has estimated the cyclone-hit regions, Mozambique and several other nations, will need more than $2 billion to recover.

Cyclone Kenneth has struck off northern Mozambique with the flow of winds up to 220 km per hour on late Thursday, heading from Comoros, the island nation, where it killed three people overnight, according to ANI news reports.

The International Monetary Fund has earlier this month granted around $118.2 million credit facility to the southern African country.
