United Nations, has been urged by its staffers to curb its carbon footprint. This comes when a worldwide Climate Strike has been called in over 150 countries. Climate Change has been an issue which has gripped the world since the beginning of the 21st century.

According to an article in Reuters, around 1000 staffers have now asked the international body to curb the carbon footprint of the organization by having to reduce the perks like Business class travel and travel handouts.

The United Nations is set to host a summit on climate change in New York. UN Secretary- General Antonio Guterres has said that the issue of climate change is one of serious concern and is the “defining issue of our time.”

Greta Thunberg, a Swedish teenager who has been an advocate on climate protection is currently in the United States and is set to lead a march during the UN Summit in New York. She along with a group of climate change advocates have recently testified in front of the US Congress urging the government to listen to the scientists.

The letter written to the United Nations is by a group called the “Young UN” which is an internal network of people who have been working with the 75-year-old institution. The UN currently employes 44,000 people in more than 60 countries.

The emergence of such a letter should be a calling for other countries to also take necessary steps phasing out non-renewable sources of energy to a renewable source of energy. According to data which the UN took out, in 2017 alone, it has emitted 1.86 million carbon dioxide.

The professionals have also urged the UN to start enforcing steps in order to reduce the carbon footprint. Curbing on perks like travel allowances are one of the ten solutions provided in the letter.

The UN Summit on Climate change is set to convene next week, the meeting is supposed to provide answers to the global efforts of curbing their carbon emissions and steps taken to follow the guidelines of the Paris Climate Accords.
