The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has on Tuesday offered assistance to France to rebuild the Notre Dame cathedral after Monday’s fire incident which suffered severe damages.

UNESCO world heritage centre director Mechtild Rossler said, “Two-thirds of the largest medieval roof of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris has “gone” after the devastating fire in Paris on Monday evening, but UN cultural experts are standing by to offer help where it is needed in rebuilding the iconic structure.”

After paying a visit to the cathedral on Tuesday, Rossler stated, “Many people are still in a state of shock, because it’s not only the Christian community, it’s a building for all of us,” according to ANI news reports.

She noted that the UNESCO has formed a group of experts in order to prove the stability of stonework and caused damages to glass windows.

Her announcement comes a day after the organization director-general Audrey Azoulay, in an official statement, stated “immediate assessment” would be carried out as soon as possible.

“It’s a universal symbol and it’s the centre of France … I think this is really shocking people profoundly and they lost something that is part of their identity,” she added.’

United States President Donald Trump has on Tuesday offered condolences to FrenchPresident Emmanuel Macron over Notre Dame cathedral fire incident, and also offered Washington’s assistance to rebuild the cathedral, according to White House.
