The United Kingdom foreign minister Jeremy Hunt said on Friday, Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit deal could get through the British parliament if the EU (European Union) would provide pure information that Northern Irish “backstop” would be temporary.

According to news reports, the “backstop” states for an insurance policy that was designed to prevent the coming back of border checks between British-ruled Northern Ireland and an EU member – Ireland. It was proving the huge obstacle to May’s divorce deal between the EU and Britain.

Earlier this month, May has pulled vote on divorce deal, after admitting the parliament would not pass it. Members of parliament were set to hold parliament talks to discuss the agreement again on January 14 with a vote.

The parliament was deeply divided into two parts – supporters of May’s Brexit deal and its opponents who opposed the deal, seeking a close ties with the EU.

According to reports, Britain would leave the bloc on March 29 and the deadlock has increased a chance that there would be no deal or would led to another second referendum.

Hunt has said the deal proposed by May could get through the parliament if the EU made it clear that the Irish “backstop” would remain time-limited.

Hunt said: “If it is temporary, then parliament can live with that.” He further said: “We can get this (the deal) through, absolutely can.”

Leader of the opposition Labour Party Jeremy Corbyn said the government was delaying the vote as they wanted to pressurize the parliament to accept May’s Brexit deal or risk a no-Brexit deal.

Corbyn said: “What I suspect is that it’s a completely cynical manoeuvre to run down the clock and offer MPs the choice of the devil or the deep blue sea.”
