The United States is planning to invest billions of dollars towards the development in Mexico and Central America as a part of a plan in order to strengthen its region economy and to restrain illegal immigration.

According to news reports, the US and Mexican government on Tuesday, said that they are planning to develop Central America and Mexico to enhance its economy and to restrain the region from illegal immigration.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, since very first, has been seeking to convince the US President Donald Trump to work with him regarding to develop Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, to stem the flow of migrant people to Mexico.

The new aid pledge which were announced on Tuesday, contained private investment, which will depend on viability of projects and also some of the new pledge were a reaffirmation of the existing people.

But, however, the Tuesday’s announcement openly resisted the expectations among some of skeptics who thought that Trump, Lopez Obrador, a leftist, a republican would clash.

Deputy director of the Mexico Institute, Wilson Centre, Washington, Christopher Wilson said, “Finally, we see that Mexico and the U.S. are on the same page in understanding and tackling migration from Central America as a regional issue, not something that one country can handle on its own.”

Wilson said that since much of the payment would be done the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) and would not even cost the US taxpayers, it is “the creative solution that was found that makes this much more palatable to the Trump administration”.

According to news reports, Mexican foreign minister Marcelo Ebrard said that Washington is promising to aid $5.8 billion for development in Central America and to increasing private and public investment in Mexico through OPIC by $4.8 billion. From OPIC amount, $2 billion is reserves to southern Mexico. Mexican government even pledged to find another $25 billion in order to develop the southern part over the next five years.

During a conference meeting, Ebrard said, “The agreements established here mean more than doubling the foreign investment in the south of Mexico from 2019.”

However, the Mexican government has also pledged to provide work visas to migrants if they qualifies to stay in the nation and the same, was urged from Obrador to the US to do.

Spokesperson of foreign minister Roberto Velasco said Mexico is about the make changes in immigration policy which is incorporating the existing plan in Mexico, for work visas to migrants.

In an official statement, the state department said it is seeking to recognize “Mexico’s willingness to develop a framework to ensure migration occurs in a legal, orderly, and safe manner”.

According to news reports, the state department also announced that in the early 2019, the two countries would be organizing a business conference to discuss the investment opportunities.

In a statement, state department said, “We announced today that OPIC could make another $2 billion available for southern Mexico if commercially viable projects are presented.”
