Taipei, June 4: Taiwan’s President has on Tuesday said China still continues to cover-up the truth behind the bloody military crackdown over pro-democracy student’s protest demonstration in and around Tiananmen Square, Beijing, 30 years ago, ahead of prayers in the region on the day of commemorating the event.

China’s troops had opened fire at protesters to end the unrest, with the death toll ranging from hundreds to thousands, as per rights groups and witnesses.

The authority of China also banned any public commemoration, as well as, a full death toll was also never released, according to Reuters news reports.

In her official Facebook handle, Taipei President Tsai Ing-wen posted: “The Chinese government not only did not plan to repent for the past mistake, but it also continued to cover up the truth.”

She added, “Please be reassured – Taiwan will definitely defend democracy and freedom. Regardless of threats and infiltration, as long as I’m the president, Taiwan will not bow to pressure.”

Tsai also expressed concerns for Beijing’s “erosion of freedom” in Hong Kong.

The Tiananmen Square anniversary is used by democratic Taiwan to condemn China, calling for Beijing to face up to its actions taken back 30 years ago.

China claims Taiwan as its sacred territory, and to be taken by force if required.

Tsai’s remarks have come ahead of a candlelight vigil in the region which includes Hong Kong and Taipei.

China suspects Tsai and her ruling party of pushing formal independence for Taiwan, a red line for China.
