The United Nations security council (UNSC) has on Tuesday condemned Taliban’s recent announcement declaring spring offensive around Afghanistan, stating that it will result in more suffering and destruction of the Afghan people.

In a press statement released, the UNSC stated: “The spring offensive will result in more suffering and destruction of the Afghan people. The members of the Security Council recognized the Afghan people’s strong desire for sustainable peace in Afghanistan.”

According to ANI news reports, Taliban’s announcement comes as a major setback to several rounds of the Afghan peace process between the United States and the Taliban since last year aiming at putting an end to the 17-year-long Afghan crisis and war. The annual spring offensive marks the starting of the so-called fighting season.

The Taliban has on Friday announced that it is launching a spring offensive, in a major setback to US-led Afghan peace talks, with an aim of “cleansing Muslim homeland from invasion and corruption” and “eradicating occupation”.

According to Al-Jazeera news reports, the launch of spring offensive uses to mark the initiation of the so-called fighting period, symbolic as the Taliban continued battling the US and Afghan forces.

In an official statement, the Taliban said, “Operation Fath, which means victory in Arabic, will be conducted across Afghanistan with the aim of eradicating occupation and cleansing our Muslim homeland from invasion and corruption.”
