A monitoring team of the UN Security Council’s 1267 Sanctions Committee will be visiting Pakistan to investigate into the country’s compliance with sanctions imposed on it by the world body this week.

The United Nations have declared Saeed as a designated terrorist for his role as the mastermind of global terrorist activities, including the dreadful 26/11 attacks on Mumbai. Taking cognizance of his terror outreach, the UN Security Council had imposed several sanctions on Pakistan under Resolution 1267.

This Resolution directed the Pakistani government to impose severe restrictions on activities of banned terrorist organizations and had sought arrest and prosecution of designated terrorists like Hafiz Saeed. The Committee will be assessing whether Pakistan has been complying with these sanctions.

Saeed had been placed under house arrest since January last year and was released only in November following a court order. His outfit, Jamaat-ud-Dawah (JuD) has plans to float a political party and contest general elections next term.

The UN team’s visit to Pakistan is seen to be a result of increasing pressure by India and the USA on Pakistan to crack down on terror more seriously. The Pakistani government, however, has declared that it shall not allow the team any access to Hafiz Saaed or JuD.
