Washington DC, July 24: The United States has on Tuesday called for an immediate truce in Idlib region to put an end to the “humanitarian disaster”, criticizing continuous aerial strikes by the Syrian and the Russian government.

In a tweet, US secretary of state Mike Pompeo said: “We condemn continued airstrikes by #Russia & Assad in #Idlib. These strikes destroy infrastructure & kill civilians. There is no military solution in #Syria. We call for an immediate ceasefire & a return to the political process. End this humanitarian disaster.”

Pompeo’s remarks came after around 31 individuals were reportedly killed in airstrikes over residential areas and a market in the opposition-held northwestern region of Syria in the past two days, according to ANI news reports.

After the market terror attack, the Syrian state-run media reported rebels bombarded Jouring village held by the government in the northern province of Hama, killing seven people.

So far, the Russian-supported offensive campaign has failed to creat key inroads into rebel-held areas in southern Idlib and northern Hama provinces, where the Islamic State (ISIS and ISIL) has been forcing fierce resistance in the last remaining region of Syria.

However, the Syrian and the Russian armies have reiterated their denial to all allegations leveled against them regarding indiscriminate shelling of civilian regions or any campaign to demolish daily life in the rebel-held regions.

The government of Russia has blamed the terrorist organizations for breaching truce by jolting government-held regions and has said Turkey has failed to cope up with its commitments under a treaty brokered in 2018 that generated buffer zone in the regions obliges it to throw rebels out.
