Iran slams JCPOA Signatories call new nuclear pact

Washington DC, August 1: The United States has forced sanctions on Iran’s foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, the US department of treasury’s office of Foreign Assets Control said on its official website.

The Treasury Department said on Wednesday that it was forcing sanctions on Zarif for following and acting on behalf of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to Al-Jazeera news reports.

In an official statement, treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin said, “Javad Zarif implements the reckless agenda of Iran’s Supreme Leader, and is the regime’s primary spokesperson around the world.”

Zarif brush aside the US sanction via Twitter, stating Washington move depicts the US views him as a “threat”, adding, “It has no effect on me or my family, as I have no property or interest outside of Iran.”

The announcement comes regardless of the US declaration of extending nuclear waivers to Iran for another 90 straight days permitting European, Russian and Chinese firms to collaborate with Tehran’s nuclear programme without any penalties.

Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Abbas Mousavi reacted angrily over the US sanctions against Zarif.

On Social media, Mousavi wrote: “The peak of stupidity and inconsistency of America’s leaders is at a point where they don’t recognise Dr Zarif as being influential in Iran’s policy but with the ultimate ignorance they sanction him! The Americans have a strong fear of the logic of Dr Zarif and his negotiating skills.”

The Trump organization said it would settle on choices on whether to concede Zarif a travel visa, including trips to the United Nations (UN), on a case by case basis, holding open the likelihood that he may go to the yearly UN General Assembly in September. Zarif last visited the UN in New York prior this month.

A senior US authority emphasized that Trump was available to converses with Iran, yet said the organization did not consider Zarif to be a key leader.
