US shutdown to likely continue in 2019 amid deadlock over border fund

The partial shutdown of the United States government is likely to continue in news year into next week amid a deadlock over a funding, what President Donald Trump has proposed for a border wall along with Mexico’s border.

According to news reports, both of the US congress chambers had a met on Thursday, but only for few minutes and took no further steps regarding to put an end to the closure. The Senate and White House will hold a meet again on Monday. Many US lawmakers did not returned back for the sessions in Washington.

The issue regarding whether or not to fund for the border wall is holding up the passing of government funding budget. Though, both the sides now seems to accept that the dispute might continue into 2019 too.

Due to ceased funding, hundreds of the US government officials are left with either unpaid leave or with no knowledge when they will get paid in future.

According to reports, Trump has said he would not back his step over his demand for border wall funding between US-Mexico to tackle and stop illegal immigration. Trump refused to sign a package which was proposed by congress, leading to a partial shutdown.

In a tweet, on December 27, Trump wrote: “Have the Democrats finally realized that we desperately need Border Security and a Wall on the Southern Border. Need to stop Drugs, Human Trafficking, Gang Members & Criminals from coming into our Country. Do the Dems realize that most of the people not getting paid are Democrats?”

Trump’s opponent accused him of exaggerating the issue of immigration movement for a political gain.

Senator Dick Durbin, while tweeting attacked Trump and wrote: “No end in sight to the President’s government shutdown. He’s taken our government hostage over his outrageous demand for a $5 billion border wall that would be both wasteful and ineffective.”

The issue has raised concerns over the outlook for the economy of the United States in 2019, leading US stock market on a rollercoaster ride in few days.
