US defense secretary Jim Mattis on Wednesday said the peace talk will held in early December in Sweden, between the UN-recognized government and Huthi rebels, with ending up the war in Yemen.

Mattis said United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudis “are fully on board, by the way”, with militarily backed of President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi.

Mattis said, “It looks like that very, very early in December, up in Sweden, we’ll see both the Huthi rebel side and the UN-recognized government, President Hadi’s government, will be up there.”

Mattis had last month called for ceasefire in Yemen, urging the opposition parties to accept the negotiation process within the given time period of next 30 days, but instead now the United Nation has pushed the time period (deadline) to the end of this year.

Mattis comment came ahead of the US state department decision to not to delay in the process, as UN envoy Martin Griffiths was in Sanaa in order to talk with the rebel regarding the negotiation and calling them to join the talks of peace in Sweden.

His comment also came ahead of US President Donald Trump’s decision to stick with Saudi Arabia, even after the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul. Mattis said, “On the Khashoggi affair, presidents don’t often get the freedom to work with unblemished partners in all things.” He further stated, “If you want to end the war you’re going to deal with Saudi. You can’t say I’m not going to deal with them.”

In a statement, state department spokesperson Heather Nauert said, “All parties must not delay talks any longer, or insist on travel or transport conditions that call into question good faith intentions to look for a solution or to make necessary concessions.”

Nauert further stated: “It is time to end this conflict, replace conflict with compromise, and allow the Yemeni people to heal through peace and reconstruction.”
