The United States is likely to designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as an international terrorist outfit by next week, a government official familiar with the matter said on Saturday.

According to ANI news reports, Washington’s decision was a part of the increasingly aggressive strategy of the White House towards Iran.

Currently, the decision is under the US state department’s purview, marking the very first time when the US has ever labelled any foreign nation’s military as global terrorists.

Meanwhile, neither the state department nor the White House national security council has made any comments over the implementation.

State department special envoy for Iran, Brian Hook, on Tuesday, told media: “Under the cover of the Syrian war, the IRGC is now trying to plant military roots in Syria and establish a new strategic base to threaten Syria’s neighbours such as Israel.”

Hoo said he can announce today, based on declassified US military reports, that Iran is responsible for the deaths of at least 608 American services members, accounting for 17 per cent of all deaths of US personnel in Iraq from 2003 to 2011. Moreover, this death toll is in addition to the many thousands of Iraqis killed by the IRGC.
