The United States will not remove Sudan from “state sponsor of terrorism” listing until Sudanese policies and leadership is changed significantly and the military no longer controls the country by being in power, a US official said on Tuesday.

According to Reuters news reports, the US state department said, “We will be willing to look at removing Sudan from the list of state sponsors of terrorism if there is significant change in the country’s leadership and policies.”

The US President Donald Trump administration has suspended the talks with Sudan aimed at resolving long-standing relations, after Sudan’s military forced former President Omar al-Bashir to step down from the presidency post, stating it would be considering a two-year transition, further followed by elections.

However, the military’s move was dismissed by protesters, who continued protesting demanding Bashir’s resignation, and called on the army to hand over the power to civilian and establish a civilian transitional body.

Sudanese main protest group has on Sunday who demanded the military council to immediately hand over the power to a civilian transitional body, stating it would continue to demonstrate on the streets which had prompted Bashir to step down last week.

The army council had also appointed lieutenant general Abu Bakr Mustafa as the intelligence chief, replacing Salah Abdallah Mohamed Saleh, who stepped down on Friday.
