We are expert in Information Technology, our neighbour Pakistan in International terrorism: EAM S Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar has said that India is considered an expert in Information Technology (IT), while our neighbour Pakistan is in International terrorism. He said, no other country practiced terrorism, the way Pakistan has done. Jaishankar was speaking on the topic of ‘Rising India and the World: Foreign Policy in Modi Era’ in Vadodara on Saturday.

Dr Jaishankar said, it is due to our government’s diplomacy that made other countries take the issue of terrorism seriously. He said, India is fairly successful in taking along the world in this fight against terrorism if not not completely.

“It’s going on for years but we could explain to world that terrorism is terrorism, today it’s being done against us, tomorrow it will be against you. Now the world’s understanding of terrorism has increased as compared to earlier times. The world isn’t tolerating it. Countries using terrorism are under pressure and are further reluctant”, EAM added.

Dr Jaishankar said, at the UNGA too, India was firm on a “zero tolerance approach” to cross-border terrorism. At the UN, New Delhi also issued a stern reaction to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s views on the Kashmir issue, he said.

On terrorist incidents prevailing in northeast India, he said that in recent years these activities have reduced because India could achieve a land boundary agreement with Bangladesh in 2015. That agreement stopped extremists from getting shelter in Bangladesh which stopped their operation in northeast India.

Jaishankar also recalled PM Modi’s advice to not yield under pressure over oil purchases from Russia. “Due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, petrol prices doubled. We had pressure from where to buy the oil but PM Modi and government were of the view that we have to do what is best for our nation and if pressure comes, we should face it,” Jaishankar added.

“During Covid, PM Modi asked the US President not to stop the vaccine supply chain for India and the world and as a result of that, the US administration gave India an exemption in the Defence Production Act and due to that our vaccination program went smoothly,” he added.
