Seoul, June 22: Chinese President Xi Jinping and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un have on Thursday reached a consensus over “important issues”, and agreed to construct their nations’ friendly ties “whatever the international situation”, N Korean state-run has on Friday reported.

According to Reuters news reports, Xi left for Beijing on Friday from N Korea’s capital Pyongyang after paying an official two-day visit, marking the first Chinese leader to visit North Korea for the past 14 years.

State-run KCNA news agency issued a report of the meeting result on Saturday. Beijing is one of the major all of Pyongyang and Xi’s trip was aimed at strengthening the nation against the international pressure from the United Nations (UN) sanctions over its missile and nuclear programmes, as well as, stalled denuclearization talks with US President Donald Trump.

Xi’s visit has come a week before a bilateral meeting between Trump and Xi on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan, amid a trade spat that caused damages to the global financial market.

The KCNA has reported both the leaders held discussions over plans to bolster cooperation between two nations and their nations” “major internal and external policies”, while also exchanged their views over international and domestic issues of mutual concern.

“The world may hope that the Chinese leader has the magic touch that can turn stone to gold, but it is unrealistic to expect that Xi can solve all the peninsula issues with a two-day visit — even if Beijing has always been the most reliable and considerate partner to Pyongyang,” it said.

“Yet Xi has touched the right stone by focusing on economic cooperation to help bring the DPRK in from the cold,” it added.
