Days before the general elections 2019, Film Actress Urmila Matondkar on Wednesday joined Indian National Congress after meeting with Congress President Rahul Gandhi. The Congress on its Official Twitter Handle shared a picture of its president along with film star Urmila Matondkar.

If Insiders of the party to be believed Congress is keen to pitch Matondkar from Mumbai North Parliamentary Seat against Gopal Shetty. The Film Star, 45, said that it is her first step towards active politics.

“By joining the Indian National Congress, I am taking my first step in active politics. I have joined films despite coming from an academics-oriented family. I am from a family that has shaped my political views based on the ideology of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Patel, said the actor while briefing the media along with Milind Deora and Sanjay Nirupam.

Milind Deora while addressing the presser said, ‘I have known Urmila-ji for years. She is someone who is extremely opinionated on issues affecting our society. She has taken the political step for the long run to serve the country through the Congress party.’

Urmila’s longtime cinema colleague Govinda (Ahuja) had in 2004 defeated Ram Naik of the BJP by over 50,000 from Mumbai Parliamentary Seat.

Congress in a run-up to the General Elections has forged an alliance with NCP in Maharashtra.

Maharashtra has a total of 48 Seats and will go to polls in four phases starting from April 11, then on April 18, April 23, and April 29.

General Elections are slated for April-May this year that would spread on Seven Phases starting from April 11 to May 19. Election Commission had on Sunday declared schedule for General Elections 2019.

Results for the crucial Lok Sabha Polls will be announced on May 23 four days after the 7th phase of voting.
