Vivek Agnihotri‘s film ‘The Tashkent Files’ is based on the mysterious death of India’s second Prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri. The film which hit the theatres on April 12, has completed its first weekend and now has ₹2.20 crores in its account. The film which started slow gained momentum over the weekend but not enough to make big numbers at the box office.

About the film’s first weekend collection, Film critic and biz analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, “Despite limited screen count [250 screens] and shows, #TheTashkentFiles gathers momentum over the weekend… Needs to pack strong numbers on weekdays, since #Kalank arrives on Wed.”

Vivek Agnihotri’s film aims to uncover the truth behind the former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri’s mysterious death.

The film is produced by Pranay Chokshi, Sharad Patel, Vivek Agnihotri, and Anuya Ritesh Kudecha.

The film also features actors like Mithun ChakrabortyNaseeruddin Shah, Shweta Basu, Pankaj Tripathi, Vinay Pathak, Mandira Bedi, Pallavi Joshi, Ankur Rathee and Prakash Belawadi in important roles. Recently, director Vivek Agnihotri has said only an “idiot or a guilty person” can call the movie propaganda and that it is about a “citizen’s right to truth”.
