Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Monday paid tribute to the Queen of Jhansi Rani Laxmi Bai on the occasion of her death anniversary. Calling her one of the leading figures of the 1857 Freedom Resistance, Rahul Gandhi in a Facebook post, said, ‘My humble tribute to the Queen of Jhansi, the heroine of Indian freedom struggle of 1857‘.

The Queen of Jhansi, Rani Laxmi Bai was born on November 19, 1828, in Varanasi. She is known for his role in Indian National Struggle and for her courage and bravery. She was popularly known as Manikarnika.

She was Known as a symbol of resistance to British rule in India. In 1842, She got married to the King of Jhansi, Raja Gangadhar Rao. However, her husband passed away after few years.

Later she took over as the Queen of Jhansi which rattled the Britishers who wanted to annex the princely state by applying the ‘Doctrine of Lapse.’

Jhansi in the year 1858 came under the forces of the British East India company that followed the war. Rani Laxmibai did not concede defeat and continued her stiff resistance till her last breath.

While Bharatiya Janata Party Bengal (BJP) Bengal tweeted, ‘Respect on the day of Laxmi Bai, the great freedom fighter, who played a leading role in British rule in 1857 and sacrificed life’.
