Many cases have been registered with CBSE against the extreme errors in the totalling of Class XII board marks. With the scraping of the re-evaluation process, students are left with only the verification one to spot the errors in checking, and alas, there are far too many than imaginable.

A Delhi student, Sonali, scored 99 in Economics, 95 in Business Studies and a mere 68 in Maths. Astounded, the student couldn’t believe her marks and sent the copy for verification. The result was a direct upgrade from 68 to 95 marks.

Another student, Samakshi Sharma, scored well in English, Business Studies and Fine Arts but scored just 42 in Maths. After she sent her copy for verification, she learnt that her actual score was 90. To the girl who wanted to get admitted in a college in the North Campus, this blunder could cost her many dreams.

Many other stories like Mohammad Affan’s 50 to 90 in Maths and another student’s 9 to 45 in Economics, tell a lot about the credibility of blind trust in the Board. A senior CBSE official admitted that the number of applications for verification of marks has been unprecedented, although he didn’t reveal the exact number.

“As I wanted to pursue Economics (Honours), I had no option but to go for verification. However, many others didn’t apply out of fear or thought that nothing will happen out of this exercise,” said Sonali. Many students who did not have enough confidence like Sonali did, did not apply for the verification and might have been a prey to similar errors.

A senior official with the CBSE exam branch, while agreeing that there were mistakes in the process, said that the difference could be due to various reasons — mistakes in totaling of marks, incorrect transfer of marks to the title page (the front of the answer books) and detachment of supplementary answer books.

Parents level another criticism, saying that the CBSE’s decision to link the two processes – verification and obtaining photocopy of the evaluated answer sheet is anti-student. At present, only students who apply for verification can get a photocopy.
The real question that rises now is, if there are such un-forgivable errors spotted in the re-evaluation one? CBSE is a Board of premier education and can commit mistakes too but that is all the more reason to continue with the re-evaluation policy and keep up the transparency.
