Kangana Ranaut‘s most-awaited Bollywood drama movie titled ‘Simran‘ has finally released today. The movie which is directed by Hansal Mehta and produced by Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar. The movie features Kangana Ranaut in the lead role.
In the movie, Kangana Ranaut’s character is called Praful Mehta. There is no Simran in the movie. Her character decides to use an alias after watching the iconic scene from the movie ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’.The makers might have thought that this name can set Praful free, but only if the movie could not have expressed the thought better.
So basically the movie ‘Simran’ is the story of a 30-year-old divorcee Praful, she lives with her parents in Georgia and works as a housekeeper in a hotel. Usually, in such cases, most middle-class families are biggest critics. Her mother welcomes home with the taunt ‘jhadu pocha kar ke thak gai hogi’, while her dad taunts her about her failed marriage her lack of career and her friends.
Praful flies to Las Vegas just to escape from her family drama. But she is not aware that her real trouble will start from Vegas only. At the baccarat table, with the rare touch of beginner’s’ luck, she wins a lot of money, but then she decided to get back to the casino to play again but minus the luck she loses everything whatever she was having.
She is basically a sunny-natured woman with a very big heart. she doesn’t mind taking things for free when she is badly in need, but she makes sure that she pays everything she owes and throws in something extra if she can. She blows kisses to the cashier while robbing a bank and offers water to another who got an asthma attack triggered by panic.
In the movie, she can be seen dealing with some issues like xenophobia Indian immigrants to the US face, gender issues within the traditional Indian framework, biased notions against minorities and the like. The movie Simran also talks about love and family. The problem with the movie is that the movie deals with a little too much and none of them have come together to form a coherent narrative. But there is a fun filled in the every chore, be it robbing a bank or her personal turmoil. As a viewer, you hardly get involved in her life and soon the trouble will come and take you on a yet another adventure.
Director Hansal Mehta wanted to make a happy, light hearted film that celebrates an independent-minded woman. However what we will get to see on-screen is something different and the character has gone wrong in a narrative that fails to keep things from falling apart.
Kangana’s character in the movie is the embodiment of what we have seen in interviews and public statements over the past few years. Her character in the movie is vulnerable, blunt, brave and honest. Kangana always did a great job of bringing the characters to life but this she goes overboard while playing the character Praful.
Moreover, there are some few songs in the movie, which you will surely not like to take home after the films get over. The title track of the movie ‘Simran’, which is sung by Sachin-Jigar is nice and breezy.
