New Delhi: India reports 18,222 fresh cases of coronavirus which pushed the total tally to 1,04,31,639 in the nation. The active cases now stand at 2,24,190. With 19,253 new recoveries, as far as 1,00,56,651 patients recovered, and with 228 new deaths in the last 24 hours, the death toll has risen to 1,50,798.

As per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a total of 9,16,951 samples were tested yesterday, and as far as 18,02,53,315 samples have been tested till January 8.

As per Union Health and Welfare Ministry, the infection (Active) rate is 2.16 percent, the recovery rate has reached 96.39 percent and the death rate is 1.45 percent.

The second phase of the COVID-19 vaccination dry run had started across 33 states and Union Territories (UTs) on Friday. A dry run was carried out in eight districts on December 28-29 and the first countrywide drill covering 74 districts was held on January 2.

Meanwhile, amid the scare of a new strain of the coronavirus that emerged in Britain, flights from the UK were to resume on Friday after the Indian government temporarily suspended services between India and the UK on December 23 over the new strain of the virus.

The Delhi government on Friday has said that the passengers returned from the United Kingdom (UK) will have to spend 7 days institutional quarantine, essentially designated hotels, even if they test negative after arrival in the city. The step has been taken to curb the spread of a new strain of coronavirus detected in the UK in September last year.
