The tensions are growing on the Sikkim border between India and China as China continues to accuse Indian troops of trespassing in Chinese territory.

The issue originated at a place called Dokalam, area near the Bhutan, Doka La is the Indian name for the region which Bhutan recognises as Dokalam, while China claims it as part of its Donglang region. Chinese army’s construction party was stopped by Indian troops from building a road, in what China claims to be its territory.

It has now been 26 days the standoff between India and China continues, China has stated that withdrawal of Indian troops from Chinese territory is the only way to solve this matter amicably. Indian foreign secretary S Jaishankar’s remarked that he sees no reason why the two nations couldn’t resolve existing differences when they have resolved past differences over the border successfully.

Responding to this, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said that this time the matter was totally different from earlier disputes over the border. He further added that, According to the 1890 convention, the Sikkim section has been recognised by both China and India and this convention is effective for both countries.

In an attempt to reach a solution to restore peace in the region External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has called for an all-party meeting on Friday.
