ShemarooMe

Shemaroo, one of India’s oldest entertainment services, has launched its own video streaming service app ShemarooMe, for Android, iOS, and web. The app will feature content from Shemaroo’s extensive library in various regional languages. The app will also feature devotional and kids contents. Shemaroo has around 3,500 titles under its library, about 2000 film titles and 1,000 hours of non-film content of which are already available.

ShemarooMe will be operating on a ‘freemium’ model, under which some of the content will be available for everyone for free while the rest of it will require a subscription. Shemaroo is taking the two-tier approach for subscription: Users can avail the individual categories such as Bollywood and Punjabi for ₹49 a month or ₹499 a year, or get full access for ₹129 a month or ₹999 a year.

Shemaroo had announced its video streaming service app last year and finally unveiled the app at an event in Mumbai on Wednesday. Some of the Bollywood classics that the app offers include Mughal-e-Azam, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, Anand, Mother India, Devdas, Golmaal, Awara, Sangam, Amar Akbar Anthony, Mera Naam Joker, Disco Dancer, and Ram Teri Ganga Maili alongside (relatively) newer films such as Jab We Met, Hunterrr, Ankhon Dekhi, Vodka Diaries, Dhamaal, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, and Dedh Ishqiya.

Shemaroo is also offering original shows under its Bollywood section. The app, however, unlike its counterparts like  Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, ALTBalaji, and Eros Now, will offer its originals as a complement to its Bollywood section.

The devotional section on the app will feature content live streamed from religious locations such as shrines while the kids section, according to Shemaroo, will have more than 150 hours of content.

Shemaroo, being one of India’s oldest film distributors, is banking upon its extensive libraries with a number of titles, especially in the historical section. With its own app, Shemaroo is looking forward to tapping into the lucrative market of online entertainment. The likes of Eros and Zee have already launched their respective Eros Now and ZEE5 apps and more are expected to follow.

Nevertheless, the venture of media companies into online entertainment services have resulted in bad news for consumers as these companies decide to keep a portion of their libraries exclusive to their own streaming services.
