Total employment In 9 select Sectors Improved In Q2 2021

Total employment that the nine select sectors collectively generated, stood at 3.10 crore in the July-September 2021 quarter, exceeding the April-June period numbers by 2 lakh, according to a quarterly employment survey by the labor ministry released on Monday.

Manufacturing, Construction, Trade, Transportation, Education, Health, Accommodation and Restaurant, IT/BPO, and Financial Services are the nine sectors that account for the bulk of non-farm employment.

Total employment numbers in the nine key industries were 3.08 crore in April-June 2021, according to the quarterly employment survey (QES) data given by Union Labour Minister Bhupender Yadav.

The rise indicates an improvement in economic activities after states lifted the lockdown restrictions put in place to contain the spread of virus. In April 2021, the country was hit by the second wave of Covid-19 pandemic which lasted at least till June.  

This is the second report sequentially. The First report was for the quarter of April-June 2021. The study covers establishments having 10 or more employees. 

The Union labour and employment minister Bhupendra Yadav said women’s participation improved to 32.1% from 29.3%.

“The estimated total employment in the nine selected sectors in July-September 2021 came out as 3.10 crore approximately, which is two lakh higher than April-June 2021,” Yadav said while releasing the Quarterly Employment Survey (QES).

Regular workers accounted for 87 percent of the estimated workforce in the nine selected sectors, with only 2 percent of the workforce being casual workers. 

In the construction sector, 20 percent of the workers were contractual , while 6.4 percent were casual workers.
