The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) has announced to introduce two new programmes for its Bachelor’s curriculum from the forthcoming academic session 2021-22. This programmes are launched by the department of mathematics and statistics.

The two new programmes are Bachelor of Science (BS) and Bachelor of Science-Master of Science (BS-MS) in statistics and data science. The Bachelor’s programme will be of 4 year while the integrated bachelor’s-masters programme is of 5 years.

The admissions to this programmes will be only through Joint Entrance Exam (JEE Advanced). This courses are designed for students who are interested in data analysis and research. Students familiar with challenges of data analytics and computing would find this courses more relevant.

The curriculum of this programmes will primarily focus on the mathematical, functional, computational and statistical applications of data sciences. Students will have the option to choose elective subjects from the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering.

Officials at IIT Kanpur said that the institute will introduce modern technologies for practical learning and will invite industry experts for guest lectures and seminars. Students will also get opportunity to participate in industry level internships and projects.

The Director of IIT Kanpur, Professor Abhay Karandikar about the programmes said that advanced studies like data sciences, artificial intelligence and machine learning are playing revolutionary role in problem solving for the modern world.

The newly launched BS and BS-MS programmes will prepare future experts in the field of data science with unique skill sets in both theoretical and practical application which is necessary for effective implementation in real life situations.

According to the IIT statement, the department of mathematics and statistics will be collaborating with the School of Medical Research and Technology (SMRT). Under this collaboration, The students of new programmes will also work on the data based on health and medical sector which is an emerging field for data analysts.
