You must be living under a rock, if you don’t know, who Idris Elba is. The British actor is known for his roles such as Stringer Bell in ‘The Wire’ and John Luther in ‘Luther’. Further, he is also known for playing Heimdall in MCU’s Thor films. The actor has a wide array of work under his belt, with admirers across the world.

For his amazing body of work in Television, the actor is set to receive one of the highest honours of British Academy, the BAFTA Special Award. He’s being honoured for his creative contribution towards televison.

On 31 July, he’ll get the award at a closed studio event. Further, the award is also for his efforts in helping push diversity in cinema.

Receiving any award from the British Academy, is a privilege for any actor and Idris shares the same view. Talking to ‘The Hollywood Reporter’, he said :

“It’s a great privilege to be honored with the BAFTA Special Award. It’s been a mission of mine to provide opportunity and access to emerging talent from diverse backgrounds in this industry, which is the same opportunity I received many years ago from open-minded and diversity conscious casting.”

While, in 2016, the actor helped push diversity in cinema by challenging the British government. He also used his own production company, Green Door Pictures to provide on-the-job training and to discover talent.

Further, the actor thanked BAFTA for considering his efforts for the cause and said :

“I thank BAFTA for recognizing myself and others who are dedicated to the same cause, as these are all necessary steps towards helping to shift the awareness and understanding of the diversity gap in entertainment.”

The BAFTA’s will take place behind closed doors, with Richard Ayoade as its host.
