'Toilet...' has larger purpose: Bhumi on film's success

Recently, Bhumi Pednekar and Akshay Kumar‘s much-awaited movie titled “Toilet Ek Prem Katha” released on 11 August. The main motive of the movie is to focus on the important subject of building and using toilets in the country. The movie was directed by Shree Narayan Singh and co-produced by Akshay Kumar and Neeraj Pandey. The movie features Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar in the lead roles, with Anupam Kher, and Sana Khan in supporting roles.

According to the recent reports, Bhumi and Akshay’s movie has ranked in over Rs 100 crore at the Indian Box Office. Bhumi is very happy on this but she says that the film had a larger purpose than just the economics. Toilet: Ek Prem Katha was the Bhumi’s second movie. She made her debut with the film titled “Dum Laga Ke Haisha” opposite Ayushmann Khurrana and for her debut movie, she won the National Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi. Now, her second movie has done well at the box office.

About this, Bhumi said, “I am so overwhelmed… After the success of ‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’, I am just very grateful to God. ‘Toilet…’ had a larger purpose. It was not just about the economics and how well it does commercially.” Bhumi says that the movie “Toilet: Ek Prem Katha” meant something special. She said, “For the past few weeks, there is news that a girl has left or divorced her husband because there is no toilet. The rate has already gone down from 64 percent to 34 percent. These things give me such immense pleasure because I always wished that ‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’ becomes a revolution or movement.

Last week, Akshay Kumar had also shared the same figures out of a research. Bhumi feels proud that she has done a movie like “Toilet: Ek Prem Katha”, which could bring about a positive difference in the country. Bhumi said, “Few years from now, when I look back and see my country open defecation-free, I know and I can proudly say that I was a part of this process. No words can explain how grateful I am to the filmmakers, everybody associated to the film and of course Akshay sir.

The movie which is in support of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan to improve the sanitation conditions of the rural areas.
