How do you judge the success of a movie? The Indian audience has polished the success of a movie based on its box office numbers but to be honest we judge the movie based on the story as it is the most essential part of a film and later comes all the other aspects including direction, performances, cast, dialogues, music, cinematography, etc. If we take a deep dive into our mainstream cinema, the story is not given much importance and most of the films work out on the factor of big stars, hence the films with quality content go missing due to low box office collections.

There have been a whole variety of good films which were high on story, performance, direction and other aspects but these films always remained on the sheet of underrated films making their way down the lane of Indian Cinema. And these films need to be highly appreciated, so here’s a list of some great Bollywood movies which were damned by box office numbers.

Manorama Six Feet Under

One of the finest Indian noirs ever created was the 2007 film Manorama Six Feet Under directed by Navdeep Singh. The film drew inspiration from Roman Polanski’s classic Chinatown and was one of the finest crime dramas which were set up in a political background.  This dark story occurs in a desert town of Rajasthan, Lakhota. Our protagonist Satyaveer Randhawa makes up as a picture of every small-town man, a suspended PWD officer, and a writer too who moves on to his life day by day hoping for his big break and comes across a woman for whom he spies on the wrongdoings of a politician (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), which leads to further events filled with tons of mysteries. The film ended up earning 15 crores at the box office and hence went missing in the stream of business-oriented films.

Citylights

Directed by Hansal Mehta, Citylights starred Rajkummar Rao and Patralekha in the lead roles. The film followed the story of a migrant family from Rajasthan who deals with hardships and struggles to earn a better life in the city of Mumbai. The film marked a perfect story and screenplay along with fine performances. A film that begins with an emotion of sadness concludes with the same, the story is heartwarming with an unexpected ending which will definitely make you cry. The film merely earned nine crores at the box office and disappeared from the theatres within a week.

Socnhiriya

Sonchiriya can make up to the list of the most underrated film of the last decade, it earned nearly ten crores at the box office out of its twenty crore budget, marking a huge loss in terms of business. But this film will definitely earn the status of a classic in the near future. Directed by Abhishek Chaubey, the film takes you to the valleys of Chambal between the dacoits and the roots of Indian society exploring the caste system and the flaws of patriarchy. The film starred Sushant Singh Rajput, Bhumi Pednekar, Ranvir Shorey, Manoj Bajpayee, and Ashutosh Rana.

The 2014 film ‘Ugly’ is one of the best suspense thriller movies ever made in Bollywood. Greed can make a man do unethical things, without caring about anyone he can cross all the limits. The film highlights that everyone in this world is lonely and no one will be with you forever. A film with amazing direction, performances, and an unexpected ending just earned six crores at the box office. If you love suspense thrillers, the n Ugly is a definite watch for you.
