A robust action is imperative during tough times. Without it, anyone can capitulate. Hong Kong’s film industry and government knows this, which is why they have charted an actionable plan, to help revive the faltering film industry. COVID-19 has caused it massive problems.

Considering all the losses, the government have launched a scheme, known as Directors Succession Scheme. Under this scheme, filmmaker Wong Kar- Wai is going to head a group of famous directors. They’ll collaborate with other young talented filmmakers and make films for a period of five years.

It will cost the government around $12.9 million. The directors along with Wong Kar- Wai will be, Peter Chan Ho- Sun, Derek Lee, Gordon Chan and duo Mabel Cheung and Alex Law. Each director is going to pair with a young talented filmmaker or two, to make a film with a budget of around $1.2 million. Further, ‘Variety’ reports that 10 to 12 films are set for release under this scheme.

After due consideration of the film industry’s losses, this decision was taken by the commerce department of Hong Kong. This is a part of five measures taken by them, whose combined total cost is $33.5 million. Edward Yau, commerce secretary announced these on Monday.

In a separate report, the ‘Indie Wire’ announced that a screenwriting program is also under place. The $1.05 million program, is aimed to produce 40 good quality scripts. Also, efforts are being made to lure investors and invest in Hong Kong films.

Already, the film industry has lost about 70 percent of its revenue due to COVID-19. Theatres have been shut since six weeks. The recent rise of Corona cases, is the recent impediment. While, Wong Kar-Wai also had to stop the production of his upcoming film ‘Blossoms’ due to the virus.

Adverse effects on the film industry were also seen last year. At that time, political unrest in the state had caused the problem to the industry.

This scheme by the Hong Kong government, is a much needed initiative and a beacon of hope for the filmmakers to survive.

Wong Kar-wai is known for films such as In the Mood For Love, The Grandmaster and Fallen Angels.
