Odia’s legendary and famous actor, Bijay Mohanty is no more. The actor passed away on Monday night at the age of 70. Suffering from a prolonged illness led to his demise. The actor, also suffered from a heart problem and for which he had undergone a treatment. The news of his death was confirmed by his family sources.

Born in 1950, Mohanty started his stint as an actor at an earlier age. He went to the National School Of Drama and directed several plays in the mid-70s. His career in Odia Cinema, started with ‘Chilika Tire’. The film went on to win the National Award that year.

In Odia cinema he did films such as Naga Phasa, Samay Bada Balaban, Danda Balunga, Sahari Bagha, Chaka Bhaunri, and Chaka Akhi Sabu Dekhuchi.

His death has led to a host of people getting sad. Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik mourned his death and said :

“He occupies a very special place in the hearts of millions of fans across the state and outside. His death marks the end of an era in the Odia film industry and has created a deep void in the industry. His contributions to Odia films will leave an unforgettable imprint for all times to come.”

The minister even went on to add, that the actor’s mortal remains will be cremated with state honours. On this, he said :

“His demis marks the end of an era in the Odia film world. Bijay Mohanty, who won the hearts of millions through his acting, will be remembered for the times to come.”

Apart from cinema, he also forayed into politics albeit for a short time. In 2014, he joined Congress and contested the Lok Sabha elections in the same year, though unsuccessfully.

A difficult and huge loss to Odia cinema indeed.
