The trend of sequels is never going to go out of trend in Bollywood. Just as a movie gets a hit tag, filmmakers start thinking about making it a franchise and release sequels, expecting it to do big, like its prequel. Most of the time it goes as planned, like ‘Golmaal’ and ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ series, sometimes the plan fails, like ‘Dedh Ishqiya’ and ‘Once Upon A Mumbai Dobara.’
Speaking of sequels, another one is going on the floor next year. This time it is Rani Mukerji starrer ‘Mardaani 2’. It is the sequel if critically acclaimed, 2014 released ‘Mardaani’. The film was based on child trafficking and Rani played the role of Shivani Shivaji Roy, senior inspector, crime branch.
Biz analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted about the sequel.
IT’S OFFICIAL… Rani Mukerji to star in #Mardaani2… Directed by Gopi Puthran [writer of the first film]… Produced by Aditya Chopra, this will be Rani’s next release after the smash hit #Hichki… Starts next year and will release in the later half of 2019.

The sequel will be produced by Aditya Chopra and Yash Raj Films and directed by Gopi Puthran, who wrote the first movie. In a statement, Rani said, “Mardaani is and will always be extremely close to my heart. Right since its release, everyone has asked me time and again when I would be doing Mardaani 2 and I’m sure this announcement will come as a pleasant surprise to them all. Gopi has written an extraordinary script that we all love and I can’t wait to start shooting this film soon,”
Tahir Raj Bhasin played an antagonist in the first film and it turned out to be the turning point of his career.
Talking about the antagonist in the sequel, Rani said, “Shivani will face a cold, merciless villain who has no empathy, no fear of God and is pure evil. The character has been written superbly and I’m excited to find out who the actor will be.”
The shooting of the film will start sometime in 2019 and it will be released in the second half of the year.
