Singapore witnessed major spike in the number of gambling related scams in the year 2020.

The fake gambling scams rose to 299 which reflected the increase of 18 more cases between the years 2019-2020.

The gamblers in toto lost around SGD15.4m ($11.6m) in various scams.

In total, there were 83 fake gambling cases investigated by the police between 2019 and 2020.

Taking advantage of the legal loopholes, the scammers would ask the players to create an account for betting on their platforms and ask for more money to unlock the accounts. Later, the accounts would be frozen thus blocking the users at the time of cashing out the money.

As per the law on gambling, called the Remote Gambling Act, the gamblers and the fraudsters, both could be fined up to SGD 5,000 or be sentenced to jail for up to six months.
