Speaking to media in Kolkata, the leader of the Congress party in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said that the Gandhi-Nehru family is like a “brand equity” to the party due to which, it is tough for any other outsider person to come and lead the party.

His comments on Gandhi family come in the light that, recently Sonia Gandhi was selected as the Interim President of Congress party. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi resigned from his post after the defeat in Lok Sabha elections 2019.

He further said that Sonia Gandhi has been very crucial in the development of the politics of the party. He also lauded her efforts for handling the crisis-like situation efficiently and leading the party to form government in 2004 and 2009.

Previously, Sonia Gandhi had voluntarily abdicated her chair for her son Rahul Gandhi. But after the defeat in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi took the responsibility for the party’s defeat and stepped down from his post.

Speaking about the Gandhi family’s role in Congress party, the leader said that politics also has the concept of brand equity, be it Congress or Bhartiya Janta Party. He said that Narendra Modi and Amit Shah play a similar role in BJP party as Gandhi family does in congress.

He also showed optimism regarding the Congress party’s future. He said since the nation is moving towards bipolar politics, there will be soon a time when Congress will be back in power. He said the country is being run as per the communal agenda of the ruling party. He also expressed his concern on the role of regional parties in the coming time. Chowdhury also explained that the Congress party should do more for gaining public acceptability.

Speaking on the abrogation of Article 370, he told that the decision taken by the ruling party is dangerous and it will only lead to the increased interference in the matters of Jammu and Kashmir. He called the move “undemocratic”.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury is a five-time Member of Parliament from West Bengal’s Beharampore seat. He is also a member of the Congress working committee that looks after major policy decisions of Congress party.
