Uber, one of the leading cab-hailing startup in India, has appointed Sanjay Gupta as its India marketing head. As per his LinkedIn profile, he joined Uber in May this year.

At Uber, he will spearhead the initiatives to strengthen the Uber brand in the country, the firm said in a statement. Sanjay Gupta had left Urban Ladder in April this year.

In a statement, Sanjay Gupta said, “I am looking forward to working with the team at Uber and take it to its next phase of growth.”

Prior to joining Urban Ladder, he was the head of marketing – wellness & youth at fast-moving consumer goods firm Marico. He has also worked at IT company Accenture.

This is the second major executive appointment at Uber India this year. Early this year, Uber hired former CEO of BSE Ltd Madhu Kannan as chief business officer for India and emerging markets.

Uber has been strengthening its senior leadership team in the country. In September last year, it hired former journalist Shweta Rajpal Kohli as head of public policy.

In India, the cab-hailing startup is in a fierce battle against home-grown startup Ola for a majority of the market share.

Recently, Uber India president Amit Jain said that Travis Kalanick’s exit as CEO will not hamper the firm’s India operations and that it will continue to invest in the country.

He also claimed that Uber India had grown around 2.5 times in terms of trips and gross merchandise volume since June last year.
