MX Player app is about to undergo a massive changeover. This changeover will make the popular local video player app to shift its focus towards over-the-top streaming. This news is coming just a day after the Times Internet acquires a majority of stakes in the app. Times Internet is the official digital wing of the India Time’s Group. The news also comes after the announcement of the app crossing the 500 million download marks on the Play Store.
According to some reports, there has been an investment of around 10 Billion rupees (around $ 140 million) by the Times Internet on the MX Player app. This investment is largely to transform the popular video player app into a hit streaming app. This streaming app could also launch for the Indian market as early as August this year.

The MX Player app is seen as an alternative to the traditional TV in India. Now, with a changeover, the app is expected to offer as many as 20 original shows within the first year of its launch. The most of the investment funds will be used for creating additional content. Also, according to a confirmation by the Times Internet, the app will be a freemium-style service. So, it means that app will still support some ads.
