Xiaomi India has changed the way we look at the budget and mid-tier Android smartphones in last few years. Once again, the company is all set to rewrite the definition of the mid-tier Android smartphone by launching the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 AKA the Xiaomi Redmi Note Y. If everything happens as expected, the next smartphone that the company might launch would be the Xiaomi Redmi Note Y, which is expected to be unveiled in January 2018.

As the company has launched a new series last week, the Redmi Note 5 is also expected to use the same series name to replace the existing lineup. As a matter of fact, we are the first publications to crack this puzzle. So, here are the new features that might set the new trend in the mid-tier smartphone segment in India. The build quality seems to remain identical to that of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, with a plastic notch on the top and the bottom for the network reception along with the metal back casing.

The major changes that one can expect from this upcoming Xiaomi Redmi Note Y is the display. According to the TENAA, the device features a new 18:9 aspect ratio screen with narrow bezels on all four corners. Though the bezels may not be smaller than that of the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 or iPhone X, this will be the best-looking smartphone in the price point of ₹15,000 to ₹20,000.

Though, the listing says that the device will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 SoC, it’s nearly impossible as that specific processor doesn’t support this new aspect ratio and FHD+ resolution. So, the device is likely to be powered by the newly announced Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 Octa-core Mobile Solution with either 3 GB or 4 GB LPDDR4 RAM with 32 GB and 64 GB onboard flash storage with a dedicated micro SD card slot.

With respect to connectivity, the device is expected to feature dedicated dual nano-SIM card slots with an SD card slot, just like the Xiaomi Yi and Xiaomi Y1 Lite. Other standard features like dual-band WiFi support with NFC and Bluetooth 5.0 are also expected to include in the package.

In terms of camera, the device is expected to either 13 MP or 16 MP rear-facing camera with PDAF and 4K video recording capability out of the box. For the selfie camera, the company might step up the game by including a 16 MP shooter with front-facing LED flash. With respect to operating system, the device is most likely to include the same high capacity 4100 mAh Li-ion battery with fast charging capability via USB type C port instead of the standard micro USB port.
