Tripoli, August 10: Libya’s globally recognized government has announced a ceasefire with the armed forces loyal to commander Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA) for a time period of Eid al-Adha.

According to ANI news reports, the development came after the UN (United Nations) had called for an immediate ceasefire in the region to both, the Government of the National Accord (GNA), which it supports, and the foe forces from the eastern region of Libya.

An official statement said: “Responding to the UN Support Mission in Libya, we are announcing that we are committing a humanitarian truce during the holy Eid al-Adha holiday.”

The statement said all the rivalries should stay loyal to the ceasefire which will involve all the embattled areas and the full suspension of indirect and direct firing, as well as, a ban over air flights, also including those conducted by the reconnaissance aircraft across its whole airspace from all the airbases.

The United Nations security council (UNSC) has last month called for an immediate truce in the Libyan capital province of Tripoli amid a hike in numbers of people killed during aerial strikes on Tajoura migrant centre, claimed by commander Khalifa Haftar’s army forces.

It has urged all the parties in Libya to respect the UN arms embargo, restrain from taking any actions into account that would cause a highly troubled situation and return to the UN-led political settlement.

The UNSC has expressed concerns over the disturbing humanitarian condition in Libya, especially regarding the migrant detention space.
