The United States President Donald Trump has on Friday announced that he has planned to nominate Kelly Knight Craft for the post of American ambassador to the United Nations.

According to BBC news reports, Knight Craft is currently the US envoy to Canada. If she holds the post of UN envoy then she will replace Nikki Haley, who had stepped down in last year’s October.

While announcing Craft’s nomination via two tweets, the US president congratulated her, saying she had done an “outstanding job” during her current role.

Trump’s first pick for the post of US envoy to UN was Heather Nauret, who has withdrawn her candidacy last week. Nauret, ex-Fox News presenter, has cited family reasons for her candidacy withdrawal decision after a “gruelling” two months in the spotlight.

In a tweet, Trump wrote: “I am pleased to announce that Kelly Knight Craft, our current Ambassador to Canada, is being nominated to be United States Ambassador to the United Nations….”

He continued tweeting: “… Kelly has done an outstanding job representing our Nation and I have no doubt that, under her leadership, our Country will be represented at the highest level. Congratulations to Kelly and her entire family!”

Nikki Haley also congratulated Craft just after Trump’s official online announcement. In a tweet, Nikki Haley wrote: “She’s done a great job representing us as @USAmbCanada and we know she’ll be a strong voice for America at the United Nations. #USstrong.”

Secretary of state Mike Pompeo has also issued a statement praising the nomination, stating he was “very pleased” with Trump’s choice and said he is also looking forward to work with Craft at the UN.

Before she can assume the role, Craft has to be formally nominated and approved by the US Senate.
