London, July 13: The Metropolitan police have launched a criminal investigation on Friday into the leaked emails of Sir Kim Darroch, the United Kingdom (UK) ambassador to the United States.

Metropolitan police assistance commissioner Neil Basu was quoted by CNN as saying the reports, “(There is a) clear public interest in bringing the person or people responsible to justice.”

In an official statement, the police official further stated, “I would say to the person or people who did this, the impact of what you have done is obvious. However, you are also responsible for diverting busy detectives from undertaking their core mission. You can stop his now. Turn yourself in at the earliest opportunity, explain yourself and face the consequences.”

The leaked emails revealed Darroch had termed United States President Donald Trump as “inept”, “incompetent”, and “insecure” in the secret memorandums sent back to London.

Trump has since castigated the envoy publically, who launched a scathing attack on Darroch on Wednesday in the wake of the controversy.

Meanwhile, the British police have urged people who were acknowledged with the controversial leaked emails to admit and come forward, according to ANI news reports.

They have also urged the media regulators not to release any further data in regards to the matter or held in those leaked cables.

In his official statement, the police assistant commissioner said, “I would advise all owners, editors, and publishers of social and mainstream media not to publish leaked government documents that may already be in their possession, or which may be offered to them, and to turn them over to the police.”
