Have you seen people migrating from one city to another in search of a job? Many of us have! Also, we have observed from 2020, this employee migration scenario has changed its shape. Now, people who have access to the internet can work for any company at the comfort of their home.

Pandemic has snatched a lot from us, leaving us hopeless or even worse than that. People lost jobs, borne losses in businesses and at the top, who had jobs felt burned out.

Work culture has undergone a metamorphosis. Employees, despite being caged in their houses, worked cross-cities, cross-countries, and even cross-continents!

Women who had quit their careers long ago because of family responsibilities could hop on to opportunities that allowed them to work while managing kids at home. Pandemic undoubtedly added more people to the pool of employment!

College students got to intern at places while managing their studies to enhance their CVs. Also, due to the pandemic, many companies opened opportunities for part-time work, allowing people to work simultaneously to bring more income at home.

Companies were acquiring talent from every nook and corner of the country, diminishing the geographical constraints. It has allowed the human resource managers to get a plethora of CVs when there is an opening and made filtering the best talent a more dynamic process. More options led to more negotiations. Ultimately, giving an edge to companies to hire the best talents at a reasonable cost.

Now that offices are opening! Employees need to return.

Wait a second! Didn’t I already mention the pandemic brought offices to home? When a person based out of Rajkot can work for a company situated in Delhi, why would he want to fly to Delhi and shift his living? Not only will it create confusion of choice for him, but also for the company.

A company invests resources in human talent to make them learn their work.

If a company, in any chance, announces the employees to join back office, then it would be a problem of choice for that employee who resides in Rajkot but work for Delhi firm.

It will leave an employee with two options:

The first one is to leave the job.

The second one is to shift to Delhi.

If an employee chooses not to join the office and quit the job, then the company has to find new talent. Again an HR has to find a suitable employee and train him/her. A never-ending loop! Therefore, it is wiser for a business to let employees work from anywhere if their business model allows so.

If an employee leaves the job, he will have to find another job offering flexibility. It will affect the regular income of that employee.

With a perspective to offer flexibility and convenience to employees, e-commerce company Meesho has announced permanent work from anywhere: from home, office, or any place. A model which they call ‘Boundaryless Workplace Model”.

By decentralizing the workplace, Meesho is allowing their employees to work from home, office or any location of their choice.

Meesho said it will establish satellite offices at locations with higher talent density, depending on employee demand. “While Meesho will be headquartered in Bangalore, the company will look to set up satellite offices across the country based on talent demand and density.”

To extend help to working parents, Meesho will sponsor daycare facilities for employees having children below the age of 6 years. “This can also be availed during official travels to Meesho’s head office in Bangalore,” the company.

An interesting feature of the ‘Boundaryless Workplace Model’ is that the employees can go on company-sponsored annual ‘workations’ in places like Goa, Shimla, and Manali, which the company says will encourage team bonding and collaboration.

Ashish Kumar Singh, Chief Human Resources Officer, Meesho said, “We have studied multiple work models to arrive at this novel boundaryless approach. In the future, this will also give talent across the globe an opportunity to build for Bharat with Meesho.”

CEO of Meesho Vidit Aatrey took to Twitter and said “We’re permanently adopting a Boundaryless Workplace model,” further saying the move would give employees the “power to define workplace flexibility and convenience.”
