Google Tv Taps On Parents’ Woes, Soon To Introduce 'Restricted Mode' To Filter Out Content Inappropriate For Kids: Report

With increasing graphical scenes in shows and movies these days, parents are worried about what their children should watch or should not watch. Not only does such content affect the mental well-being of children, but also introduces them to content that is beyond their maturity level.

In a move in this direction, the Tech giant Google is working on developing a “restricted mode” for Google TV that will filter out content not suitable for children.

In times of OTT and less censorship, digital parenting has become a need of the hour. Perhaps the parents will be able to take a sigh of relief if Google TV can scrap out content containing violence, voyeurism, foul language, among others.

On a lighter note, even families will be able to watch content together!

The tech giant is developing a novel feature for Google TV that will prevent adult content from automatically playing on the home screen.

The new content filter feature, termed “restricted mode,” was discovered by 9to5Google  in the most recent version of the Android TV interface.

When this feature is turned on, it blocks auto-play on any “mature” programs but would be applicable for ad-supported free movies and TV shows along with their trailers. Users will need to use their PIN to unlock this setting.

Users can also use the option of “hidden movies & shows” that may allow them to hide content from the home screen, but this is just an extension of an existing feature that hides content on the Kids Profile.

According to strings, this Google TV launcher update spotted by 9to5Google appears to introduce a new feature for Kids Profile to have its own Watchlist. The Watchlist will allow users to save content both from the TV’s own recommendations as well as other devices and link to that content within apps.

Google TV allows users to stream over 300 live TV channels for free, courtesy of its Pluto TV alliance.
