The World Environment day is celebrated on June 5 of every year to create global awareness. It is also celebrated to remind people about the responsibilities towards Mother Earth.  Every individual should take prompt actions to protect the environment. What you sow, so shall you reap is universally true, when it comes to Nature and environment.

Bangaloreans are very sensitive towards the environment. The Horticulture Department of Bangalore will plant 571 Saplings including fruit and scented varieties at Lalbagh, Cubbon Park, Raj Bhavan and Indira Gandhi Musical Fountain Garden. The department has also collected some rare species wherein 24 species will be planted in and around Cubbon Park and 10 species at Lalbagh. Though Saplings are planted on every occasion, yet the greenery is missing. After the sapling is planted, the next level care has to be taken to help the plants to blossom.

This time, along with the plantation, landscape designing with flowering and fruit trees, creepers, shrubs and ramblers will also be focused on.  The area with less vegetation will be focused and more saplings will be planted there to convert it to a greenery zone. Many trees are aged  and have to be uprooted so that new saplings can be planted in the vacant space. The flowering season differs from species to species.  The Philippines Jade Vine and the Blue Plumbago flowers from December, the Red Jade from New Guinea flowers in July-September and January-February keeps the garden filled with flowers and greenery. Thus, such seasonal flower bearing plants will also be included in Lalbagh and Cubbon Park. The nursery area will cover fruit bearing trees like Malay Apple (Australia), fig and litchi to attract the birds.

The following are the initiatives by Bangaloreans:

  • The Uttarahalli Magakere Walkers’ Association, along with Ingersoll Rand, will plant 100   saplings at the lake and tend them for a year.
  •  Airtel will give a sapling to every customer who opts for e-billing or the ‘pay from home’ system. The saplings will be distributed at Airtel Relationship Centres across the city.
  •  Students of TRIO World School will distribute saplings.
  • Kempegowda International Airport Limited will plant saplings on Thursday. It has unveiled a Green Map about various initiatives for a sustainable environment
  • Surana College students will clean the area outside the institute. Volunteers will distribute free saplings to residents.

It is nice to experience many volunteers on the environment day,who are keen in preserving the planet. Let us all vow that we will contribute in making this city a litter free  and safe environment zone.
